Writer who won defamation, sex abuse suit against Trump seeks new compensation

New York, May 22 (EFE).- Writer E. Jean Carroll, who in early May won a sexual abuse and defamation lawsuit against former President Donald Trump, on Monday asked the judge overseeing the case to award new compensation to her for remarks the magnate made about her at a televised town hall meeting the evening after the guilty verdict against him was announced.

On May 9, after a civil trial, a New York jury found Trump guilty of sexually abusing and defaming Carroll and ordered him to pay $5 million in punitive damages to her.

Carroll had filed the suit to hold Trump accountable for allegedly raping her in a New York apartment store dressing room in 1996 and then defaming her when she publicly reported the matter.

The former president, however, rejected the guilty verdict and said he did not know Carroll, going on to reiterate that claim, joke about her and call her, in effect, crazy in a town hall meeting the following day with New Hampshire citizens organized by CNN.

The 76-year-old ex-president had blasted the jury verdict on his Truth Social social media account then at the CNN town hall called the case “a rigged deal,” swore on his children that he didn’t know Carroll and lambasted her as a “whack job.”

The largely pro-Trump live audience at the town hall laughed, cheered and applauded the ex-president’s remarks about Carroll.

Instead of presenting a new defamation lawsuit against him, Carroll’s attorney Roberta Kaplan on Monday delivered documents to the court seeking a modification of the damages in the defamation element of the suit against Trump.

The attorney said that her client is seeking “very substantial” updated compensation for punitive damages after Trump repeated many of the defamatory comments for which the jury had just found him guilty the day before, according to the documentation she filed in court.

Carroll filed her defamation lawsuit against Trump in 2019 over defamatory comments he made as president about her, but although a guilty verdict has been handed down and initial damages awarded, Trump is appealing the case and all parties are waiting to see if the judge rules that the appeal can more forward.
