Bangladesh supports One-China policy after Pelosi visit to Taiwan

Dhaka, Aug 4 (EFE).- Bangladesh on Thursday voiced its support for the One-China policy following a recent visit by the United States House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan that increased tensions between the world’s two largest economies.

Apart from Pelosi’s visit, which has sparked tensions in the Taiwan Strait with live fire military drills by China, Bangladesh’s stance comes in the run-up to a scheduled visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to the South Asian country.

Wang is expected to arrive in Bangladesh on a two-day visit on Saturday and meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and during which multiple bilateral agreements are likely to be signed, junior minister for Bangladesh’s foreign affairs, Shahriar Alam, confirmed to reporters in Dhaka.

“We believe in the One-China policy. We don’t want the situation to deteriorate because the world is facing enough problems. We hope all parties would exercise restraint and follow the UN charter in this regard,” Alam said on the recent US-China tensions over Taiwan.

Bangladesh’s foreign ministry earlier in a statement on its verified Facebook had also reiterated its support for the One-China policy.

“Bangladesh reiterates her firm adherence to ‘One China’ policy and urges the parties concerned to resolve their differences in accordance with the UN Charter and through dialogue,” it said.

The Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh, Li Jiming, in a separate statement, lauded Bangladesh’s position, and described the two countries as “good neighbors, trustworthy friends and reliable partners.”

“The two countries have always understood and supported each other on issues of core interests concerning respective sovereignty, security and territorial integrity,” he said in a statement posted on the Embassy’s Facebook page.

“China highly appreciates Bangladesh’s longstanding commitment to the one-China principle and resolute opposition to Taiwan Independence,” the statement added.

Alam, in turn, described Bangladesh’s relations with China as “deep and wide,” and looked forward to the signing of multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) and agreements with China during Yi’s visit.

“We have a deep and wide relationship with China. In this context, multiple MoUs and agreements will be signed. It includes renewing and new cooperation, especially in disaster management. The future cooperation will also be discussed,” he said.
