Yoon’s visit to the US will be ‘historic milestone’ for alliance: Seoul

Seoul, Mar 8 (EFE).- The South Korean president’s state visit to Washington next month will mark a “historic milestone” for the alliance between the two countries, his presidential office said on Wednesday.

Yoon Suk-yeol’s first state visit by a South Korean leader in 12 years, during which he will have a summit meeting and state dinner with US President Joe Biden on Apr. 26, coincides with the 70th anniversary of their bilateral alliance.

“President Yoon’s state visit to the United States will serve as a historic milestone for the ROK-US alliance, which is considered one of the most successful alliances in history, to evolve more proactively in preparation for the rapidly changing international situation and future uncertainties,” presidential spokesperson Kim Eun-hye said in a statement after the official announcement of the visit by the White House.

The leaders are expected to define “concrete and practical measures for cooperation” in various fields, Kim added.

The White House said that Biden and Yoon “will highlight the importance and enduring strength of the ironclad US-ROK alliance as well as the United States’ unwavering commitment to the ROK. The presidents will discuss our shared resolve to deepen and broaden our political, economic, security, and people-to-people ties.”

Yoon will be the first South Korean president to pay a state visit to Washington since President Lee Myung-bak in 2011.

Biden will host Yoon and his wife and first lady Kim Keon-hee in the second state visit he has received since he came to power in January 2021.

For now, the only one who has been received in this way by the US president has been France’s President Emmanuel Macron, who visited Washington in December last year. EFE
