Young men get ordained as monks in Thailand

Buddhist devotees take part in the Dhammadayada novice ordination ceremony at Wat Phra Dhammakaya temple in Pathum Thani province, in the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand, 07 December 2020.

Over 3,500 novices were ordained at Wat Phra Dhammakaya temple as part of the Maha Puchaniyacharn Ordination Project for the year 2020.

The ordination project allows Thai men from every corner of the country to be ordained as Buddhist monks and study Dharma, or Buddhist doctrine, and meditation.

During the program, the new monks will remain in the monastery for up to four months before returning to their homes. Ordaining as Buddhist monks is a way for men to accumulate merit, and is seen as a way to bring respect to their parents.
