Sydney’s central, eastern suburbs to enter lockdown

Sydney, Australia, Jun 25 (EFE).- Australian authorities ordered a week’s lockdown of the central and eastern suburbs of the country’s most populated city of Sydney on Friday amid a growing Covid-19 outbreak.

The health authorities reported 22 new local infections Friday, bringing the total outbreak to 65 cases – many of the Delta variant – since it was detected last week in the tourist neighborhood of Bondi.

The lockdown comes into effect from midnight Friday, until midnight on July 2, for the districts of Woolhara, Waverley and Randwick, as well as the center of Sydney.

“You need to stay at home unless absolutely necessary,” Premier Gladys Berejiklian said.

It estimated to affect more than 1 million people who live or work in the densely populated areas, according to national broadcaster ABC.

People may only go out to buy products or receive essential services and provide care to third parties, among other exceptions, according to the order.

For the rest of the Sydney metropolitan area, with 5.3 million people, and other surrounding populations, the restrictions on social distancing and the use of face masks on public transport remain until next Friday.

The Bondi outbreak, which is one of the most serious so far in the state of New South Wales, according to Berejiklian, also prompted New Zealand to suspend the travel bubble with this jurisdiction for a further 12 days.

Australia, which has been living a normal practice for months, only broken with short and localized lockdowns to quickly control outbreaks, has accumulated more than 30,400 cases of Covid-19, including 910 deaths.

It has vaccinated about 5.7 million people, of which more than a million have received the full two doses. EFE
