Zelenskyy to participate in Arab League summit, say Saudi officials
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, May 19 (EFE).- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was expected to travel to the Saudi city of Jeddah on Friday to address the annual summit of heads of state of the Arab League, Saudi diplomatic officials told EFE.
According to the officials, who asked not to be named, Zelenskyy would attend the 32nd summit as the “guest of honor” of the host country and give “an important speech” before the leaders of this Arab body.
On the sidelines of the summit, he is also expected to meet with “presidents and monarchs” of the member states of the Arab League.
The summit will also be marked by the participation of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, as Damascus finds itself back in the Arab League after nearly 12 years of suspension over the crackdown on anti-government protests in 2011.
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Saudi Arabia has wanted to establish itself as one of the main mediators in the conflict of the Middle East region. EFE
