Winter storm brings snow to Spain’s Barcelona, Balearics

Madrid, Feb 28 (EFE).- Barcelona and the Balearic Islands have witnessed a rare dusting of snow as Storm Juliette brought frigid temperatures and strong winds to the normally mild Spanish regions.

Maximum level red weather alerts were in place for Mallorca on Tuesday as winds were expected to reach up to 90 kilometers per hour (56mph) and whip up waves as high as eight meters (26 feet) on the northern coast, according to the state meteorological agency Aemet.

Ibiza and Menorca were under yellow and orange alerts for adverse weather respectively.

On Monday, parts of the Balearics and the city of Barcelona in Catalonia saw snowfall as low as sea level as the freezing temperatures moved over the region.

The winter storm has plunged temperatures in almost all Spanish regions apart from Extremadura.

Areas of central Spain could see the mercury drop as far as -10C (14F), Aemet warned. EFE
