Zelenskyy visits war-torn Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine

Lviv, Ukraine, Dec 20 (EFE).- Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday traveled to the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region, amid intense fighting between Ukrainian and Russian troops.

Zelenskyy “met with the military, spoke to them and presented awards to our soldiers,” the Ukrainian presidential office said, according to Ukrinform news agency.

Fierce fighting has gripped Bakhmut for months after Russia targeted the small town as one of its key military objectives in Ukraine.

In his late-night speech, Zelenskyy claimed Monday that Bakhmut remained “the hottest spot on the entire front line – more than 1,300 km of active hostilities.”

“Since May, the occupiers have been trying to break our Bakhmut, but time goes by and Bakhmut is already breaking not only the Russian Army, but also the Russian mercenaries who came to replace the wasted army of the occupiers,” the Ukrainian president added. EFE
