Ziyech, Thiago Silva fire Chelsea to 2-0 win over Tottenham
Sports Desk, Jan 23 (EFE).- Hakim Ziyech and Thiago Silva on Sunday each scored a second-half goal to lead Chelsea to a 2-0 win over Tottenham.
The Moroccan midfielder drew first blood just two minutes into the second half with a superb curl from outside the area.
Ten minutes into the second half, Silva doubled the score, on a header off a cross from a set-piece by Mason Moun.
With the win, Chelsea have 47 points, one behind second-placed Liverpool, who defeated Crystal Palace 3-1 earlier in the day thanks to goals from Virgil van Dijk, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fabinho.
The Dutch defender opened the scoring eight minutes into the contest, heading in Andy Robertson’s corner.
Oxlade-Chamberlain added the second in the 32nd minute when he controlled a nice Robertson cross to fire in a close-range shot.
The home side had chances to get into the scoreboard, but decisive saves from the Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson kept the Reds’ 2-0 lead until half-time.
Crystal Palace finally found the back of the net when Jeffrey Schlupp sent a clever through ball to Jean-Philippe Mateta, who set up Odsonne Edouard to tap in 10 minutes into the second half.
Liverpool extended their lead thanks to a Fabinho penalty after a foul on Diogo Jota in the box.
The win increases Liverpool’s tally to 48 points, nine behind Premier League leaders Manchester City, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton on Saturday.
