Rafa Nadal says he intends to play at Wimbledon
Calviá, Spain, Jun 17 (EFE).- Rafael Nadal on Friday confirmed his intention of playing at Wimbledon despite his chronic foot injury.
The Spaniard, who this month won his 14th French Open — his 22nd Grand Slam trophy overall — spoke to reporters in his native Mallorca, where he has been training on grass courts ahead of the tournament at the All England Club, due to take place from June 27 and July 10.
Nadal said he would travel to London on Monday.
“My intention is to travel to London next Monday, to play two matches there before the tournament starts and just follow my normal schedule to prepare the best way possible for Wimbledon.
“Today that’s all I can say, and I am positive about that, what can happen in a couple of days, if the situation changes or becomes more negative, then that will be the moment to explain another thing.
“Today I’m positive, I’m happy the way I was able to practice the week here and I’m excited to travel to Wimbledon to try to play Wimbledon after three years.”
Nadal, 36, has not played at Wimbledon since 2019. The 2020 edition of the tournament was canceled due to Covid-19 and the Spaniard was forced to sit out competition in 2021 due to his injury.
He has won the Grand Slam twice before, in 2008 and 2010.
During the press conference, the Spaniard also confirmed media rumors that he and his wife Mery Perello were expecting their first child although said he preferred not to elaborate on the subject as it was part of his private life. EFE
