China records 207 new Covid-19 cases

Shanghai, China, Oct 23 (EFE).- China reported 207 new Covid-19 infections, including 155 locally transmitted cases, the National Health Commission announced Sunday.

The remaining cases were detected among overseas travelers at various entry points of the country.

The largest caseload until midnight on Saturday was registered in Guangzhou (32), followed by Inner Mongolia (26) and Shanxi (24).

The Commission also reported 791 asymptomatic infections which are not included in the official case tally.

China, which has a strict zero-tolerance policy towards Covid, has seen several Omicron outbreaks in recent months.

These have led to record numbers of infections not seen since the start of the pandemic in the first half of 2020.

A total of 319 patients were also discharged on Saturday after recovering from Covid-19.

The total number of active symptomatic infections on mainland China stands at 3,874, of which 13 are serious.

Since the start of the pandemic, 257,362 people in the country have contracted the disease and 5,226 have died, according to the Commission’s data.

Almost 7.2 million close contacts of those infected have been monitored, of which some 460,000 are still under observation. EFE
