Denmark stay perfect with 2-0 win over Scotland

Sports Desk, Sep 1 (EFE).- Denmark beat Scotland 2-0 Wednesday to go 5 points clear atop Group F in the European qualifiers for World Cup 2022.

The Danes, with victories in all four of their matches, are 5 points ahead of Israel and Austria, who won Wednesday over Faroe Islands and Moldova, respectively.

“You have reunited the nation” said a banner displayed at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, where a sold-out crowd of 43,000 gave a rapturous reception to the squad that overcame the loss of their captain in the tournament opener to reach the semifinals of Euro 2020.

Missing eight players to injury and Covid-19, Scotland were in for a difficult night.

Daniel Wass threatened twice in the early going and finally broke through in the 14th minute, heading-in a cross from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.

Seconds later, Joakim Maehle made it 2-0 for the homes side with an assist from Mikkel Damsgaard, and only a good save by Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon prevented Yussuf Poulsen from extending the margin before half-time.

Scotland’s first attack came only in the 48th minute, an effort from 25 yards by Billy Gilmour that wasn’t far off the mark.

The visitors’ best chance fell to Ryan Fraser, who forced a good save from Kasper Schmeichel with 10 minutes left in regulation.

Denmark have outscored their opponents 16-0 so far in the qualifiers. EFE alc/dr
