Bucharest, Dec 19 (EFE).- European Parliament president Roberta Metsola on Monday vowed zero tolerance for corruption, following last week’s arrest of several officials on bribery allegations

During a press conference in Bucharest, Metsola stressed the European Parliament will guarantee those implicated in the recent corruption scandal that hit the legislative body are not exempted from punishment.

The Maltese official said she would keep fighting those threatening principles of the rule of law, stressing the need to correct the errors that have led to the current situation.

Last week, Belgian police arrested the vice president of the European Parliament, Eva Kaili, after confiscating hundreds of thousands of euros at her home in Brussels.

Kaili, as well as several other lawmakers, is allegedly involved in a bribery scheme reportedly linked to Qatar and Morocco.

Metsola flew to Bucharest on Monday to meet with Romania’s president Klaus Iohannis and prime minister Nicolae Ciuca and is expected to deliver a speech at the Romanian parliament.EFE
