MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) —- 96-year-old Thomas Pharr’s funeral was Tuesday, but when his family tried to lay him to rest next to his wife of 63 years, they learned someone else had been buried there the same morning.
“Everybody is saying, ‘I don’t know, I don’t know,’” said Butch Pharr, Thomas Pharr’s son.
Now the family of the retired Memphis firefighter and WWII veteran wants answers.
“The blame or problem starts at the top, it don’t start at the very bottom. But nobody wants to take responsibility for anything that’s happened,” said Pharr.
It’s only been nine days since Thomas Pharr passed.
But ten minutes before he was to be buried, his family said they were taken aside and informed by Forest Hill East Cemetery employees that there was a mistake, and no burial would be happening.
“The wrong body was put in the grave and nobody checked or did anything behind it,” said Pharr. “They wait until 10 minutes after two, to tell you that there’s a body already and they’re in the grave.”
The Pharr family is now going to the Tennessee Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers to file a formal complaint.
The family said the cemetery is collecting paperwork from the health department to exhume the body and reaching out to the family of the person currently buried in Pharr’s plot.
All the Pharr family says they want is to bury their loved one.
“On the other family’s behalf and our behalf, this shouldn’t happen to anybody. I mean there’s really no closure until we know that he’s next to our mom,” said Janis McIntyre, Thomas Pharr’s daughter.
Action News 5 did reach out to Forest Hill East for comment but hasn’t heard back.
The Pharr family is told their father’s body is at the funeral home.
They’re planning to bury him for a second time Thursday.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/WMC) — El funeral de Thomas Pharr, de 96 años, fue el martes, pero cuando su familia trató de ponerlo a descansar junto a su esposa durante 63 años, se enteraron de que alguien más había sido enterrado allí esa misma mañana.
“Todo el mundo dice: ‘No sé, no sé'”, dijo Butch Pharr, el hijo de Thomas Pharr.
Ahora la familia del bombero retirado de Memphis y veterano de la Segunda Guerra Mundial quiere respuestas.
“La culpa o el problema comienza en la parte superior y no los subordinados. Pero nadie quiere asumir la responsabilidad de nada de lo que sucedió”, dijo Pharr.
Solo han pasado nueve días desde que murió Thomas Pharr.
Pero diez minutos antes de que lo enterraran, su familia dijo que los empleados del cementerio de Forest Hill East los llamaron y les informaron que había un error y que no se llevaría a cabo el entierro.
“Se puso el cuerpo equivocado en la tumba y nadie revisó ni hizo nada”, dijo Pharr. “Esperaron 10 minutos después de las dos, para decirte que ya hay un cuerpo y que ya estaba en la tumba”.
La familia Pharr ahora se dirige a la Junta de Directores de Funerarias y Embalsamadores de Tennessee para presentar una queja formal.
La familia dijo que el cementerio está recopilando documentos del departamento de salud para exhumar el cuerpo y comunicarse con la familia de la persona actualmente enterrada en la parcela de Pharr.
Todo lo que la familia Pharr dice que solo quieren es enterrar a su ser querido.
“En nombre de la otra familia y en nuestro nombre, esto no debería pasarle a nadie. Quiero decir que realmente no hay cierre hasta que sepamos que está al lado de nuestra madre”, dijo Janis McIntyre, la hija de Thomas Pharr.
El noticiario Action News 5 se comunicó con Forest Hill East para hacer comentarios, pero no ha recibido respuesta.
A la familia Pharr se le comunico que el cuerpo de su padre ya está en la funeraria.
Planean enterrarlo por segunda vez el jueves.
