Silva, Kante, Rudiger give Chelsea 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur

(Update 1: Adds Chelsea’s win, alters lede and headline)

Sports Desk, Sep 19 (EFE).- Chelsea on Sunday defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 in Premier League action.

After a scoreless first half, Chelsea got on the scoreboard four minutes into the second period on a header by Brazilian defender Thiago Silva off a corner from Spanish midfielder Marcos Alonso.

Shortly before the one-hour mark, French midfielder N’Golo Kante doubled the Blues’ lead on a shot that was deflected off Tottenham’s Eric Dier into his own goal.

Two minutes into second-half stoppage time, German defender Antonio Rudiger rounded off Chelsea’s tally total as he fired home from inside the area.

With the win, Chelsea regained the top spot on the Premier League table from Manchester United, who earlier in the day claimed a dramatic 2-1 win over West Ham thanks to a late goal by Jesse Lingard and a decisive penalty save by goalkeeper David De Gea.

Seeking to rebound after their 2-1 Champions League defeat to Young Boys, United found themselves trailing 1-0 at the half-hour mark when Algerian forward Said Benrahma’s shot was deflected off Raphael Varane into his own goal.

Stoppage time, however, proved to be eventful as West Ham were awarded a penalty after Luke Shaw’s handball in the area, a decision that was taken after watching the replay on VAR.

De Gea maintained the Red Devils’ lead as he denied Mark Noble, who has just come off the bench, a chance to score from the 12-yard spot.Manchester United are now tied with leader Chelsea and second-placed Liverpool at 13 points each five games into the season.

Elsewhere, Leicester City were stunned 2-1 by a visiting Brighton, which claimed their fourth victory to hold the fourth spot, while the Foxes are 12th. EFE
