A $7,500 Award is Offered In Series of City Gear Smash-And-Grab Break-Ins

MEMPHIS, TN (CrimeStoppers) — A $7,500 CrimeStoppers extra award has been posted in a series of smash and grab burglaries that hit City Gear and Hibbett stores in the area this year.
The latest incident occurred on Lamar Avenue around 9 p.m. November 24 when burglars in several cars smashed through a window and carted away thousands of dollars in goods. Multiple Memphis stores have been burglarized more than 60 times this year, according to a spokesperson with parent company Hibbett, Inc., based in Birmingham, Alabama.
“We are doing everything we can to prevent these burglaries,” the company said. “We have experienced significant losses in merchandise and that doesn’t include all the damage to our stores.”
The company is taking several security measures for its stores, but also seeks the public’s help in catching any of the burglars.
The $7,500 award will be added to whatever normal cash award the CrimeStoppers Awards Committee will determine should be paid to any tipster who helps police make an arrest or issue a warrant for an arrest, said David Wayne Brown, executive director of CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County.
“We know plenty of people have information that could help us solve these felonies. They have seen video footage, or they know people who suddenly have expensive City Gear merchandise in their possession. We hope people will do the right thing and call 529-CASH (2274) with helpful tips,” Brown added.
Burglaries involving several perpetrators rushing into stores after dramatic break-ins have plagued many retail outlets throughout the country. In Memphis, stores like City Gear, Hibbett and numerous wine and liquor shops have felt the brunt of this particular type of crime.
