Greece hits new record in coronavirus numbers

Athens, Aug 24 (EFE).- Greece broke its single-day record for new coronavirus infections Tuesday, registering 4,608 new cases, as hospitalizations rose.

The spike in cases is fueled by the Hellenic country’s slow vaccination campaigns and the highly infectious Delta variant, which originated in India.

Most of the new cases are located in Athens (1,096), Thessaloniki (402), the island of Crete (344).

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Greece has seen 566,812 infections and 13,466 deaths linked to the Covid-19.

Vassilis Kikilias, the Greek minister of health, said Tuesday that at least a million doses need to be administered in order to achieve herd immunity, with around 56% out of the population of 10.5 million having received the two vaccine doses.

Starting mid-September, restaurants, theaters, and leisure centers will be only accessible to those who have been inoculated or those who have recovered from infection no longer than six months, according to Kikilias.EFE
