Eastern China raises Typhoon Muifa alert

Beijing, Sep 13 (EFE).- The eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang on Tuesday upgraded to a level three alert, the third highest of four, ahead of the expected landfall of Typhoon Muifa.

It is estimated that Muifa, which materialized as a tropical storm last Thursday more than 1,000 kilometers southeast of the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa, will make landfall Wednesday night between the cities of Zhoushan and Ningbo in Zhejiang, the state news agency Xinhua reported.

At 6 pm local time (10:00 GMT) on Monday, the center of the typhoon was about 610 km southeast of Zhoushan, with a wind force of level 13 (133-148 kph) near its center.

Forecasts estimate that the winds will reach a maximum force of level 15 (166-186 kph) in some areas by Thursday.

The typhoon, the 12th in the region so far this year, is already making itself felt in the vicinity of the megalopolis of Shanghai, where the first rainfall caused by Muifa is being recorded.

Fishing boats in the East China Sea are ordered to moor in port before midday local time (04:00 GMT) on Wednesday to shelter from strong winds.

The Chinese meteorological center also predicts that Muifa will gradually weaken after making landfall on its northwest course, although it warned of the need for boats to take all possible precautions in the areas affected by its passage. EFE
