Japanese destroyer runs aground, causing oil leak

Tokyo, Jan 10 (EFE).- A maritime destroyer ran aground on Tuesday in waters off a Japanese island, causing an oil leak from its fuel tank, according to the defense ministry.

The incident took place on Tuesday in Yamaguchi Prefecture’s Suo-Oshima Island when the 4,550-ton JS Inazuma hit a rock on the seabed while sailing in the Seto Inland Sea.

The ministry reported no injuries on the vessel, but the damage caused an oil leak, which spread 30 meters around the ship.

The Japanese military has begun to tow the ship and collect the discharge after the vessel dropped anchor.

Inazuma was conducting maneuvers at the time of the incident, the defense ministry said. EFE
