Blount County Deputy Killed During Traffic Stop in Maryville

MARYVILLE, TN (WSMV) — A local, state, and federal manhunt is underway for a suspect wanted in a shooting that killed one deputy and seriously injured another on Thursday night in Blount County.
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, two deputies with the Blount County Sheriff’s Office pulled an SUV over in the 4900 block of Sevierville Road around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. The driver, 42-year-old Kenneth DeHart, proved to be uncooperative with the deputies and refused to exit the vehicle.
TBI reported a taser was deployed with no effect and DeHart produced a gun and fired multiple shots at the deputies. At least one deputy returned fire but they were both hit and DeHart drove away from the scene. The BCSO reported the vehicle is a silver Lexus SUV.
Deputy Greg McCowan and Deputy Shelby Eggers were transported to an area hospital to receive treatment for their injuries. McCowan was unable to recover from his injuries and died, while Eggers was treated and released from the hospital.
TBI agents obtained warrants charging Kenneth DeHart with one count of First Degree Murder, one count of Attempted First Degree Murder, and one count of Felon in Possession of a Weapon.
A statewide Blue Alert was issued for DeHart, and he was added to the TBI Most Wanted list. The BCSO considers DeHart to be armed and dangerous and advises against approaching him.
There is a $10,000 reward for information leading to DeHart’s arrest, and anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts should call 865-981-7125 or 1-800-TBI-FIND.
