New river of lava leaves more destruction in La Palma

Santa Cruz de La Palma, Spain, Nov 25 (EFE).- A new river of lava spewed out of the volcano in La Palma Thursday, spreading more destruction on the Spanish Canary island.

The molten rock devouring everything in its path has entered a cemetery and a solar power station, according to Miguel Angel Morcuende, the technical director of the Volcanic Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands (Pevolca).

The new stream is raising concerns because it is reaching areas that have not had lava flows before, Morcuende explained.

Since the volcano first erupted on September 19, lava that can reach temperatures of around 1,300 degrees Celsius has completely destroyed 1,484 buildings and more than 400 hectares of crops, according to recent data released by regional authorities.EFE
