Federer will compete at Tokyo Olympics

London, Jul 5 (EFE).- Roger Federer is to take part in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics later this month, the Swiss Olympic Committee announced on Monday.

This would be the fifth Olympics appearance for the tennis star who turns 40 next month, having made his first appearance at a Games in Sidney 2000, where he met his wife, Mirka.

The Swiss has two Olympic medals under his belt, including Beijing 2008 doubles gold that he won alongside Stan Wawrinka and the singles silver four years later, when he lost to Andy Murray in London.

He missed out on Rio 2016 due to a knee injury.

Prior to the Wimbledon championship, currently taking place in London, the 20-time Grand Slam champion said he would take a decision on whether or not to compete at the Olympics after his run at the All England Club.

The decision was announced after he qualified for the second week at the third Grand Slam event of the season, having played barely four tournaments this season as he returns after a sabbatical year that included two knee surgeries.

The eight-time Wimbledon champion would become the oldest player to reach last-8 at the All England Club should he overcome Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego on Monday.

Several leading stars, including Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams of the United States, have decided to skip the Olympics, which kicks off on 23 July. EFE
