Pope Francis returns to Vatican after colon surgery

Vatican City, Jul 14 (EFE).- Pope Francis left hospital on Wednesday 10 days after undergoing colon surgery.

The 84-year-old returned to the Vatican from the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Catholic hospital, stopping on the way to pray at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.

Francis had surgery on July 4 for symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the large intestine.

During his stay in the hospital he met with other patients, including children undergoing treatment for cancer.

On Sunday, he led the Angelus prayer from his 10th-floor hospital balcony alongside some of the children.

He used the prayer to call for universal access to healthcare.

While hospitalized, the pontiff, a football fan, watched both the Euro 2020 and Copa America tournaments, which were won by Italy and Argentina, his home country, respectively.EFE
