Ronaldo makes history in Portugal’s 3-0 win over Hungary

Sports Desk, Jun 15 (EFE).- Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo became the top scorer in the history of the European Championships  with two goals to seal the reigning champions’ 3-0 win over Hungary in Tuesday’s Euro 2020 opener for both teams.

Playing in his record fifth European Championship, the 36-year-old striker boosted his career tally in the competition to 11.

Ronaldo made his first Euro appearance on home soil in 2004 and has taken part in every single edition since, including his team’s title run five years ago in France.

But the Hungarians put up a valiant fight in front of 60,000 people at a packed Puskas Arena in Budapest, holding off Portugal until the 84th minute, when Raphaël Guerreiro scored from close range.

Ronaldo converted a penalty in the 87th minute to make it 2-0 before dribbling around goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi for a tap-in two minutes into stoppage time as Portugal took possession of first place in Group F. EFE
