Harvey Weinstein found guilty of rape in Los Angeles

Los Angeles, United States, Dec 19 (EFE).- Former film producer Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of three counts of rape and sexual assault Monday in a trial in Los Angeles, California.

Weinstein was found guilty of rape, forcible oral copulation and sexual penetration by a foreign object involving one woman, US media reported.

The 70-year-old producer was acquitted of one of the seven charges against him and the remaining three, including the case of Jennifer Siebel Newsom, wife of California Governor Gavin Newsom, did not have a unanimous verdict by the jury, comprising eight men and four women.

The jury asserted said it was incapable of reaching a verdict on Siebel’s rape and sexual assault charges and those of another woman, thus a mistrial was declared on those charges.

In 2020 Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison at a trial in New York, and now could face up to 24 years in prison, but lawyers and defense did not comment on the final verdict.

The former Hollywood titan was tried on seven counts based on allegations by four women who were sexually assaulted between 2005 and 2013, all allegedly in Los Angeles hotel rooms.

Weinstein’s 2020 conviction in New York marked a great triumph for the #MeToo movement in its fight against sexual abuse and assault against women.

Weinstein is serving his confinement in the Twin Towers prison, in downtown Los Angeles, after being extradited from New York in July 2021.

In all, more than 80 women have accused the former producer of sexual offenses and misconduct. EFE
