Mexicans sow ‘hope’ amid pandemic with yoga in sand dunes

Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, Jul 3 (EFE).- Dozens of people gathered Saturday in the sand dunes of Samalyuca, near Ciudad Juárez, on the border with the United States, to sow “hope” amid the Covid-19 pandemic, which has made Mexico the fourth country with the most deaths in the world.

The yoga meeting in the dunes has been held annually since 2015, but it was canceled last year due to the pandemic, and resumed Saturday.

As a security measure, the number of participants was drastically reduced, since in the previous edition around 500 people attended and on this occasion only about 90 were allowed.

With 233,400 deaths and 2.5 million confirmed infections, Mexico is the fourth country in the world with the most fatalities from the pandemic behind the US, Brazil and India.

After four months of falling infection numbers, the country is experiencing a rebound in tourist areas such as the states of Yucatán, Quintana Roo and Baja California Sur, which has set off alarms of a possible third wave.

For its 126 million inhabitants, Mexico has supplied 46.5 million vaccine doses and 19.7 million people have completed the full vaccination schedule. EFE
