More than 50% of EU adults now fully vaccinated
Brussels, Jul 13 (EFE).- More than half of the European Union’s adult population has received a full course of the Covid-19 vaccine, president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said Tuesday.
“Enough doses have been delivered to vaccinate 70% of adults in the EU. Let’s do it,” she posted on her Twitter account, as she celebrated the 50% vaccination milestone.
Von der Leyen stressed that vaccination is key to “keep safe from variants and avoid a new wave of infections.”
On June 29, the EC president announced that over 60% of adults in the EU had received at least the first jab of the Covid-19 vaccine, and that 41% were fully inoculated.
The Commission urged member states on July 5 to administer vaccine doses as they received shipments, amid growing gaps in vaccination rates across the 27 EU countries.
Appointments for vaccinations soared in France Monday evening, with a record-high one million people booking their jab, following a public address by President Emmanuel Macron in which he announced that only vaccinated people will be allowed to take part in various daily life activities through new restrictions in the coming weeks.
He argued for the measure to incorporate the so-called Covid certificate in theatres, shopping malls, train stations and restaurants, as a way to avoid another lockdown, as the coronavirus Delta variant threatens to jeopardise the continent’s summer season reopening. EFE
