Two killed, one injured in shooting at Thai military facility

Bangkok, Sep 14 (EFE).- Two people were killed and one was injured on Wednesday morning in a shooting inside a Bangkok military facility, the Royal Thai Army said.

A soldier was arrested after the incident, which occurred at 8.45 am at the Army Training Command in the capital’s central Dusit district.

The suspect, who was identified as a 59-year-old Sergeant Major Yongyuth Mangkornkrim, allegedly entered the building carrying a firearm and shot at personnel on duty, killing two, according to the statement.

The victims were identified as Sergeant Major Nopparat Inthasunthorn and Sergeant Major Prakarn Sinsong.

Another person, Sergeant Major Yongyuth Panyanuwat, was injured during the incident and taken to Phramongkutklao Hospital for treatment, although his status has not been disclosed.

Authorities have not yet determined the reason for the attack.

“The cause and motivation of the incident are under investigation. Initially, the agency provided information that (it) may be caused by stress and health problems,” the statement said.

The army said that the suspect fled after the attack but was soon arrested in front of the military unit.

Legal proceedings against him have been initiated.

Live videos broadcast by witnesses on social media show at least two ambulances arriving at the scene to attend to the victims as well as flurry of movement of official vehicles.

The authorities blocked the streets near the building to prevent other incidents but this has failed to deter dozens of citizens from gathering outside the facilities. EFE
