Bale leads Tottenham to win over Sheffield with hat trick

London, May 2 (EFE).- Gareth Bale, who recently has seen his clout on Tottenham Hotspur diminish, redeemed himself on Sunday with a hat trick against Sheffield United, the 4-0 win keeping the Spurs in the running for the Champions League.

The London football squad still has a difficult and complicated road ahead before it secures a berth for next season’s top continental competition, given that it is five points behind Chelsea, which is in fourth place, albeit with four weeks yet to go before the British participanting teams are decided.

Bale, though, had a phenomenal outing against Sheffield on Sunday at Tottenham Hostpur Stadium, achieving his first hat trick since December 2018, when he had scored three goals for Real Madrid in the semifinal match of the Club World Cup against the Kashima Antlers.

Bale – who was once again in the starting lineup after missing the Carabao Cup final – opened the scoring by sending the ball over Aaron Ramsdale after a great pass from Serge Aurier for his 12th goal in all competitions this season.

He notched his second tally a little more than an hour into play in a one-on-one faceoff against the Sheffield goaltender after Son Heung-min cleared a Blades corner kick, then got by two challenges and sent a pass to the Welshman, who fired the ball into the top corner.

Bale put his third on the board by zeroing a powerful shot from outside the area low into the Sheffield net after a great team effort involving Alli and Aurier. He was then replaced in the 75th minute.

To top off the runaway win, Son scored the fourth and final goal of the night on a pass to the left from Steven Bergwijn, after which he darted inside to dispatch a beautiful curling shot off the far post and into the net from 20 yards.

Bale has not scored a hat trick for Tottenham since December 2012, when he was instrumental in the Spurs’ 4-0 road win over Aston Villa.

With the three points from the victory, Tottenham – now with 56 points in the table – cemented itself in the League’s No. 5 slot, one ahead of West Ham United and two ahead of Liverpool, who saw its match against Manchester United postponed on Sunday after the latter’s fans staged a protest to express their displeasure with the team’s management.

Sheffield, meanwhile, is already facing relegation.
