Con Nota de Bronce en Beale Street, se rendirá homenaje a Aretha Franklin

Beale Street Brass Note Will Honor Memphis-Born Aretha Franklin

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/The Daily Memphian) — La Nota de Bronce número 178th en Beale Street se presentó el domingo por la tarde después de una procesión en el centro de la ciudad. La nota honrará a la difunta Aretha Franklin, “la indiscutible reina de la música Soul”.

“Podemos honrarla cuando entramos en un nuevo siglo de música Soul y celebramos nuestro bicentenario”, dijo el alcalde de Memphis Jim Strickland mientras esperaba que llegara la procesión. “Es una nueva era para el alma de Memphis”.

Dijo que sus “raíces del Gospel” y su temprana carrera como cantante, Franklin también mostraba la herencia de Memphis del país.

“(Ella mostró) el Gospel y el Soul entrelazados”, dijo, y agregó que esas son dos características distintas de la ciudad. “Ella puede rastrear sus orígenes a Memphis y el sonido de Memphis. Su sonido es representativo de Memphis “.

Kevin Kane, presidente y CEO de Memphis Tourism, dijo que sus raíces del Soul resuenan en el Medio Sur, ya que su padre era un pastor y su madre era una cantante de Gospel.

“Ella nació aquí, pero no creció aquí”, dijo Kane. “Pero eso no importa, ella sigue siendo una persona de Memphis para nosotros”.

A Franklin se le celebró con la procesión de B.B. King´s Blues Club a Alfred’s en Beale. Una trompeta, un trombón y un saxofón llevaron a unas 25 personas a Beale. Dentro de Alfred’s, los músicos locales realizaron un homenaje y la gente bailaba, meciéndose en sus asientos, tocando sus pies y cantando.

Strickland leyó parte de su proclamación antes de la inauguración.

“El legado de Aretha Franklin abarca seis décadas increíbles y le otorgó 44 nominaciones a los Grammy y 18 victorias. Ella fue la primera mujer en ingresar al Salón de la Fama del Rock ‘n’ Roll … Aretha Franklin siempre será recordada por su tremenda contribución a la música de Memphis”.

La inauguración se produce el día antes de lo que habría sido el 77 cumpleaños de Franklin y siete meses después de su muerte en agosto en Detroit.

También es casi cinco meses después de que fuera admitida en el Salón de la Fama de Memphis. Kane dijo que él siempre había querido que ella estuviera aquí cuando la ciudad la honrara, pero ella murió antes de que pudieran hacerlo. Estaba emocionado por honrarla de esta manera entre otras estrellas como Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley y B.B. King.

Kane dijo que no estaba seguro de la ubicación exacta de la nota, pero dijo que estaría en su lugar antes de que el Festival Internacional de Memphis en mayo honre a Bluff City.

MEMPHIS, TN (The Daily Memphian) —The 178th Beale Street Brass Note was unveiled Sunday afternoon following a processional Downtown. The note will honor the late Aretha Franklin, “the undisputed queen of soul.”

“We can honor her as we enter a new century of soul and celebrate our bicentennial,” Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland said as he waited for the processional to arrive. “It’s a new era for Memphis soul.”

He said her “gospel roots” and early career as a gospel singer also showed the country Franklin’s Memphis heritage.

“(She showed) gospel and soul interwoven together,” he said,  adding those are two distinct features of the city. “She can trace her origins to Memphis and the Memphis sound. Her sound is representative of Memphis.”

Kevin Kane, president and CEO of Memphis Tourism, said her gospel roots resonate with the Mid-South as her father was a pastor and her mother was a gospel singer.

“She was born here, but she didn’t grow up here,” Kane said. “But that doesn’t matter, she is still a Memphian to us.”

Franklin was celebrated with the processional from B.B. King’s Blues Club to Alfred’s on Beale. A trumpet, trombone and saxophone led about 25 people down Beale. Inside Alfred’s,  local musicians performed a tribute and people sat around dancing, swaying in their seats, tapping their feet and singing along.

Strickland read part of his proclamation before the unveiling.

“Aretha Franklin’s legacy spans an incredible six decades and brought her 44 Grammy nominations and 18 wins. She was the first woman inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame … Aretha Franklin will forever be remembered for her tremendous contribution to Memphis music.”

The unveiling comes the day before what would have been Franklin’s 77th birthday and seven months after her death in August in Detroit.

It is also nearly five months after she was inducted into the Memphis Hall of Fame. Kane said he had always wanted her to be here when the city honored her, but she died before they could do it. He was excited about honoring her in this way among other stars like Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and B.B. King.

Kane said he was unsure of the exact location of the note but said it would be in place before the Memphis in May International Festival honors the Bluff City.
