Highland Oaks Middle School Wins National Chess Championship

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC/LPL) — Un equipo de ajedrez de la escuela secundaria del Condado de Shelby es la mejor en la nación después de formar el equipo hace un año.

“Para mí, ser un campeón de ajedrez, es que no subestimes a tu oponente”, dijo Austin Bland, de 14 años.

Austin, un estudiante de octavo grado en Highland Oaks Middle School, habla en serio sobre el ajedrez y sus estrategias de juego.

“Todas las piezas diferentes y cómo se pueden alinear para hacer un plan diferente y si alguien trata de vencer ese plan siempre puede intentar tener un plan de respaldo”, dijo Bland.

“Tienes que ser capaz de adaptarse a cualquier situación”, dijo Joshua Seymore, de 13 años.

El equipo de primer año compitió contra más de 1.000 estudiantes durante tres días en Atlanta a principios de este mes y ganó el Campeonato Nacional Junior High de Ajedrez.

“Mientras estaba allí jugué dos juegos donde la gente comenzó a llorar como en el medio del juego y quería darles un abrazo, pero tuve que mantener mi valiente rostro”, dijo Bland.

Los líderes de la Escuela del Condado de Shelby reconocieron los logros la noche del martes cuando el equipo mostró las sonrisas y el equipo que trajeron a casa.

Chantelle Mitchell es la entrenadora y patrocinadora del equipo.

“Es una experiencia de vida que puedes compartir con tu familia y amigos”, dijo Mitchell.

A ella y al equipo les encanta decirle a los demás cómo se traduce el juego a la vida cotidiana.

“Para no rendirse nunca porque las cosas pueden salir mal, y puede sentirse deprimido, pero aún puede volver a subir”, dijo Seymore.

“Eso es lo que personalmente me enseñó a estar preparado para lo que viene”, dijo Bland.

El equipo de ajedrez preparado y poderoso dominó equipos de todo el país, dejando un mensaje duradero para que todos lo recuerden.

“Podemos lograr todo lo que realmente queremos”, dijo Bland. “No hay un objetivo demasiado lejos”.

“To me being a chess champion, don’t underestimate your opponent,” said 14-year-old Austin Bland.

Austin, an eighth-grade student at Highland Oaks Middle School, is serious about chess and its gameday strategies.

“All the different pieces and how they can align to make a different plan and if someone tries to defeat that plan you can always try to have a backup plan,” Bland said.

“You have to be able to adapt to any situation,” said 13-year-old Joshua Seymore.

The first-year team competed against more than 1,000 students over three days in Atlanta earlier this month and won the National Junior High Chess Championship.

“While I was there I played two games where people started crying like mid-game and I wanted to give them a hug but I had to keep my brave face on,” Bland said.

Shelby County School leaders recognized the accomplishments Tuesday night as the team showed off smiles and the hardware they brought home.

Chantelle Mitchell is the team coach and sponsor.

“It’s a life experience that you can share with your family and friends,” Mitchell said.

She and the team love telling others how the game translates to everyday life.

“To not ever give up because things might go wrong, and you might feel down but you can still come back up,” Seymore said.

“That’s personally what it’s taught me to be prepared for what’s coming,” Bland said.

The prepared and powerful chess team dominated teams from across the country, leaving a lasting message for all to remember.

“We can accomplish anything we want to really,” Bland said. “There’s no goal too far.”
