MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Memphis in May has recently announced that it will be holding a visual art contest honoring Memphis, and invites all local artists to participate. The winning artwork will be the image of the popular international festival next year, when the bicentennial of the “Home of the Blues” is to be celebrated as well.

Artists interested in entering this contest, which is the first in the history of Memphis in May, will be able to send digital images of their original artwork from now on. The deadline for submission is December 1.

The design of the poster should be inspired by the vibrant culture and great diversity of Memphis. Participants must be residents of Memphis or Shelby County.

The jury in charge of choosing the winners of the open-call will be composed of artists, museum and gallery administrators, art academicians and art educators. The votes from the general public will also determine who the finalists will be.

Selected works of art, including that of the winning artist, will be exhibited throughout the month of May in a well-known gallery in the area; said exhibition will be entitled “VISIONS OF MEMPHIS.” In addition to this, the winning artwork will be available for purchase.

The lucky winners will also receive a cash prize: $2000 for the first place, $1000 for the second place and $500 for the third place. “Honorable Mentions” recipients will each receive $200.

“Each year, Memphis in May invites a member of the local creative community to pay tribute to the honored country by creating an original artwork,” said James L. Holt, President and CEO of Memphis in May. “With this year’s break from the tradition of honoring a country and instead honoring the rich history and culture of Memphis, we are also breaking from our traditional selection process and want Memphians to participate in both the submission and selection,” Holt added.
