Mission of Mercy del Medio Sur realizará tercer evento anual de asistencia dental gratis

Mid-South Mission of Mercy to Hold Its Third Annual Free Dental Care Event

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Mid-South Mission of Mercy (Misión de Misericordia del Medio Sur/MidMOM, por sus siglas en inglés), una organización comunitaria que provee asistencia de salud dental a personas de bajos recursos o sin seguro médico, estará realizando su tercer evento anual de asistencia dental gratis en Memphis durante los días 26 y 27 de enero del presente año, en el gimnasio de la Iglesia Bautista Bellevue, ubicada en 200 Appling Rd., Cordova, TN 38016. La clínica móvil abrirá a las 6:00 a.m. y los pacientes serán atendidos por orden de llegada -muchos pacientes comienzan a hacer fila con anticipación para asegurarse de ser atendidos.

Entre los servicios que se estarán ofreciendo están las limpiezas, los rellenos y las extracciones. “Realmente queremos abordar las necesidades dentales más inmediatas y dolorosas en MidMOM, pero uno de nuestros objetivos es conectar a los pacientes con clínicas dentales locales durante todo el año para que sigan recibiendo una atención continua”, dijo Delaney Williams, directora ejecutiva de Memphis Dental Society (Sociedad Dental de Memphis) y directora ejecutiva de Mid-South Mission of Mercy.

“Desde un principio (cuando fue creada en el año 2000), el objetivo de Mid-South Mission of Mercy ha sido brindar atención inmediata a personas desatendidas y sin seguro de salud en el área metropolitana de Memphis y en todo el Medio Sur, aliviando así el dolor causado por problemas dentales y refiriendo a los pacientes con futuros proveedores dentales; también educamos a los pacientes sobre la importancia de una buena salud oral. Al proporcionar tratamiento a estos pacientes, sin requerir identificación/prueba de ingresos/prueba de residencia, etc., MidMOM satisface una gran necesidad en nuestra comunidad: la necesidad de tener acceso a la atención dental. Este evento es una oportunidad para que la Sociedad Dental de Memphis y la Sociedad Dental del Condado de Shelby, junto con nuestros socios, brinden la atención dental que tanto necesitan los miembros de nuestra comunidad”, indicó Williams.

Para este año, la clínica móvil de Mid-South Mission of Mercy, la más grande del país, busca atender a más de 2.500 pacientes, proporcionando de esta manera un monto de $1,5 millones en atención dental gratuita.

Según Williams, dicha clínica móvil atendió a 2.158 pacientes en el 2017, de los cuales 312 eran latinos. Por lo mismo, para esta nueva ocasión se contará con aproximadamente 60 intérpretes (español/inglés) registrados, aunque se espera que se integren más personas bilingües como voluntarios para este fin.

En sí, son casi 1000 los voluntarios (dentistas, higienistas y asistentes dentales) que forman parte de este gran evento anual -en el 2017 hubo 995 voluntarios. De hecho, muchos dentistas donan su dinero y tiempo para que esto suceda, y cierran sus consultorios y traen a todo su personal para colaborar también.

Cabe destacar que más de 250 de estos dentistas son latinos.

Desde el 2016, Mid-South Mission of Mercy ha proporcionado más de $2,3 millones en odontología a más de 4.200 pacientes en el área metropolitana de Memphis; esto con la ayuda de casi 4.000 voluntarios.

El doctor Mitchel Godat, un dentista periodontal del este de Memphis, es uno de los organizadores de esta clínica dental móvil y ha ayudado también a recaudar fondos por medio de subvenciones para MidMOM

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Mid-South Mission of Mercy (MidMOM), a community organization that provides dental care to low-income or uninsured people, will be holding its third annual free dental care event in Memphis on January 26 and January 27, at Bellevue Baptist Church’s gym, located at 200 Appling Rd., Cordova, TN 38016. The mobile clinic will open at 6:00 a.m. and patients will be seen on a first come, first serve basis – many patients begin lining up in advance to ensure they are seen.

Among the services that will be provided are cleanings, fillings and extractions. “We really want to address the most immediate and painful dental needs at MidMOM, but one of our goals is connecting patients to local, year-round clinics to receive continued care,” said Delaney Williams, Executive Director of Memphis Dental Society and Executive Director of Mid-South Mission of Mercy.

“Since the beginning, the Mid-South Mission of Mercy’s aim has been to provide immediate care to under-served and under-insured individuals in the greater Memphis area and throughout the Mid-South by alleviating pain caused by dental problems, connecting patients with future dental providers, and educating patients on the importance of good oral health. By providing treatment to patients, without requiring identification/proof of income/proof of residency, etc., MidMOM is meeting a great need in our community – the need for access to dental care. This event is an opportunity for the Memphis Dental Society and Shelby County Dental Society, along with our partners, to provide much needed dental care to members of our community,” Williams added.

This year, the Mid-South Mission of Mercy mobile clinic, the largest in the country, seeks to serve more than 2,500 patients, thus providing an amount of $1.5 million in free dental care.

According to Williams, the mobile clinic attended 2,158 patients in 2017, of whom 312 were Latinos. Therefore, for this new occasion there will be approximately 60 registered interpreters (Spanish/English), although it is expected that more bilingual people will be included as volunteers for this purpose.

In general terms, there are almost 1000 volunteers (dentists, hygienists and dental assistants) who are part of this great annual event – in 2017 there were 995 volunteers. In fact, many dentists donate their money and time to make this happen, and close their offices and bring all their staff to collaborate as well.

It should be noted that more than 250 of these dentists are Latinos.

Since 2016, MidMOM has provided over $2.3 million worth of dentistry to more than 4,200 patients in the greater Memphis area with the help of nearly 4,000 volunteers.

Dr. Mitchel Godat, a Board-Certified Periodontist in East Memphis, is one of the organizers of this mobile dental clinic and has also helped raise funds by writing grants for MidMOM. In June of 2017, D. Godat transitioned into the role of Executive Director of the Memphis Dental Society and Mid-South Mission of Mercy.
