MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Reconocido como una de las voces más distintivas del momento, el cantante, compositor y guitarrista Raul Midón se estará presentando en el Halloran Centre este viernes, 2 de marzo, como parte de su gira internacional. Su concierto será a las 7:30 PM y los boletos cuestan $30 por persona.

Para aquellos que no lo conocen, Raul Midón es un artista que combina su distinguida voz con el beatboxing (una forma de ruido vocal que se basa en la habilidad de producir beats de batería, ritmos y sonidos musicales utilizando la boca, los labios, la lengua y la voz) para crear una interpretación musical magistral. “Es como una banda de un solo hombre que convierte una guitarra en una orquesta y su voz en un coro”, según el periódico The New York Times.

Tras graduarse en la Universidad de Miami en 1990, Midón comenzó a trabajar como vocalista de fondo con varios artistas latinos como Shakira, Alejandro Sanz, Julio Iglesias y José Feliciano, por ejemplo. También dedicó gran parte de su tiempo componiendo canciones y teniendo presentaciones en diferentes restaurantes de la ciudad. Así fue como comenzó una carrera musical que hoy día ha cosechado un sinfín de éxitos.

Aunque Midón compone y canta principalmente en inglés, también lo ha hecho en español, su segundo idioma -sus padres son de Argentina, de ascendencia afroamericana. De hecho, en 1999 grabó un disco “Gracias a la Vida”, con canciones de otros artistas latinos, incluyendo el tema del mismo título del álbum, el cual fue compuesto por la cantautora chilena Violeta Parra. También escribió junto con Bill Withers (“Ain’t No Sunshine”, “Use Me” y “Lean on Me”) la canción “Mi Amigo Cubano” (2014), la cual fue completamente grabada en español.

Pero no fue sino hasta que grabó su álbum “State of Mind” (2005) que Midón empezó a tener más fama como artista. Según nos dijo en una entrevista exclusiva, este álbum representaba algo único para él, era como su esencia misma. “Para mí era importante hacer un álbum que fuera único y que representara lo que soy”.

Ahora, el artista se encuentra de gira internacional promocionando su nuevo disco, “Bad Ass and Blind”, el cual lanzó hace apenas un año y por el cual obtuvo una nominación a los Premios Grammy en la categoría de Mejor Álbum de Jazz Vocal.

‘“Bad Ass and Blind’ es el segundo álbum que he grabado y producido yo mismo, incluyendo la parte de la ingeniería acústica y los arreglos musicales”, dijo el cantautor y guitarrista nacido en Nuevo México. “Aprendí a grabar y a ser ingeniero de audio usando una computadora y usando un lector de pantalla, y como en ese momento estaba trabajando con algunos grandes músicos del Monterey Jazz Project, escribí algunas canciones basadas en mi colaboración con esos músicos y, de alguna manera, eso fue lo que creó este disco. Me sorprendió mucho obtener la nominación al Grammy, fue genial, especialmente porque yo mismo produje el álbum”, agregó.

Según Midón, eligió este título para su noveno álbum porque quería que la gente le preguntara al respecto. “Una de las razones es que quería hablar sobre el hecho de que estoy haciendo algo que la mayoría no hace, que es escribir y tocar mi propia música, y luego también encargarme de la producción e ingeniería de audio siendo una persona ciega. Nadie me preguntaría sobre eso, así que pensé que, si llamaba a mi nuevo disco ‘Bad Ass and Blind’, entonces sí lo harían”.

“Bad Ass and Blind” es el álbum con más jazz que Midón ha grabado hasta ahora.

El talentoso compositor y cantante describe su música como ecléctica, ya que toca R&B, soul, jazz, pop, rock, música clásica, congas e incluso flamenco. “Es realmente una combinación de todas las cosas y la influencia que me gusta en la música”, indicó.

Raul Midón estará lanzando otro álbum este año -probablemente en septiembre- que hizo con la Metropole Orkest (Orquesta Metropolitana Holandesa) en los Países Bajos, bajo la dirección de Vince Mendoza.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Known as one of the most distinctive voices of the moment, the songwriter and guitarist Raul Midón will be performing at the Halloran Center this Friday, March 2, as part of his international tour. The concert will begin at 7:30 PM and tickets are $30 per person.

For those who do not know him, Raul Midón is an artist who combines his distinguished voice with beatboxing (a form of vocal percussion that primarily involves the art of mimicking drum machines and other musical instruments, using one’s mouth, lips, tongue, and voice) to create a masterful musical interpretation. He is “a one-man band who turns a guitar into an orchestra and his voice into a chorus,” according to The New York Times.

After graduating from the University of Miami in 1990, Midón began working as a background vocalist with several Latin artists such as Shakira, Alejandro Sanz, Julio Iglesias, and José Feliciano, for example. He also spent much of his time writing songs and playing in different restaurants around the city. That’s how his musical career began, allowing him to follow a path that only leads to success.

Although Midón writes and sings mainly in English, he has also done it in Spanish, his second language – his parents are from Argentina, of African-American descent. In fact, in 1999 he recorded an album with cover songs titled “Gracias a la Vida” (Thanks to Life), with songs by other Latin artists, including “Gracias a la Vida,” written by Chilean songwriter Violeta Parra. He also wrote “Mi Amigo Cubano” (My Cuban Friend) with Bill Withers (“Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Use Me” and “Lean on Me”), a song that was completely recorded in Spanish and released in 2014.

But it was not until he recorded his album “State of Mind” (2005) that Midón became more famous. As he told us in an exclusive interview, this album represented something unique to him. “For me the whole thing was making an album that was very much unique to me, very much being myself”

Now, the artist is on an international tour promoting his new album, “Bad Ass and Blind,” which he released just a year ago and for which he won a Grammy Award nomination in the category of Best Jazz Vocal Album.

“‘Bad Ass and Blind’ is the second album that I engineered and produced myself,” said the songwriter and guitarist who was born in New Mexico. “I learned how to record and engineer using a computer and using a screen reader, so I was working with some really great musicians with the Monterey Jazz Project and I wrote some songs based on working with those musicians, and it kind of turned into this record. I was very surprised to get the Grammy nomination, it was pretty cool, especially because I produced the album myself,” he added.

According to Midón, he chose this title for his ninth album because he wanted people to ask him about it. “One of the reasons is that I wanted to kind of talk about the fact that I am doing something that most don’t do, which is to write and play their own music, and then also producing it and engineering it as a blind person. Nobody would ever ask me about that, so I figured if called it ‘Bad Ass and Blind,’ then they would.”

“Bad Ass and Blind” is the most jazz album that Midón has made so far.

The talented songwriter describes his music as eclectic, as he plays R&B, soul, jazz, pop, rock, classical, congas, and even flamenco. “It’s really a combination of all of the things and the influence that I like in music.”

Raul Midón has another album coming this year -probably in September- that he did with the Dutch Metropole Orkest (or Metropole Orchestra) in the Netherlands, conducted by Vince Mendoza.
