Ukraine pushes for tougher sanctions as Russian airstrikes hit Kyiv

Kyiv, Jun 26 (EFE).- Ukraine urged G7 leaders gathered in Germany for the group’s annual summit on Sunday to slap tougher sanctions on Russia as fresh airstrikes struck Kyiv.

“A Ukrainian kid was sleeping peacefully in Kyiv until a Russian cruise missile blasted her home,” Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted on Sunday. “Many more around Ukraine are under strikes.”

Yurii Ihnat, the spokesperson for Ukraine’s Air Force Command of the Armed Forces, said the Russian military had fired Kh-101 missiles at Kyiv with Tu-95 and Tu-160 bombers.

According to Ukrinform news agency, the Kh-101 missiles have a range of 5.5 thousand kilometers, so bombers can attack without entering Ukraine’s airspace.

The “G7 summit must respond with more sanctions on Russia and more heavy arms for Ukraine,” Kuleba said.

“Russia’s sick imperialism must be defeated,” the minister added.

The leaders of the G7 — a group made up of the world’s most advanced economies with the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and France — are meeting in Elmau, in Germany’s Bavarian Alps with the war in Ukraine dominating the agenda.

Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is expected to join the summit at Monday’s session.

Biden, who arrived in Elmau Saturday night, on Sunday said the G7 will announce a ban on Russian gold import, which will be one of a raft of measures aimed at crippling Russia’s economy in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine.EFE
