READING IS A PLEASURE

Esta frase se ha usado en muchas campañas de lectura alrededor del mundo, aunque no todos compartimos lo que dice. Para algunos leer es aburrido, para otros es algo que no es para ellos. Sea como sea, es importante que ayudemos a nuestros niños a disfrutar del placer de la lectura. Un niño que lee será un adulto que piensa, un joven que no se aburre y muy probablemente, un individuo informado y con una visión amplia del mundo.
Gianni Rodari, escritor italiano de literatura infantil, hizo una lista de las “Nuevas maneras de enseñar a odiar la lectura”:
1- Echarle en cara a los niños que no les gusta leer.
2- Obligar a nuestros chicos a leer.
3- Mandarles a leer un libro que no es de su agrado.
4- Exigirles que lean el libro de principio a fin.
5- Dejar al niño solo con el libro.
6- Convertir los libros en otros “deberes escolares”.
7- Comentarles todos los pormenores del libro.
8- Convertir el libro en una herramienta didáctica.
9- Obligar a comentar un libro leído.
Si queremos que los niños amen y disfruten la lectura, esta lista nos deja claro las cosas que no debemos hacer y, por ende, también nos señala las que debemos practicar. Debemos apoyar a nuestros niños cuando muestren interés por la lectura. La lectura no debe ser obligada, pues casi todo lo que nos imponen tendemos a rechazarlo. Es importante buscar y elegir libros que sean del interés de los niños. De igual manera, debemos guiar a nuestros niños en cuanto a la lectura se refiere, sugiriendo libros pero brindándoles a la vez la posibilidad de elegir.

This phrase has been used in many reading campaigns around the world, though not all of us share what it says. For some reading is boring, for others it is something that is not for them. Either way, it is important that we help our children to enjoy the pleasure of reading. A child who reads will be an adult who thinks, a young adult who is not bored and most likely, an individual that is informed and has a broad view of the world.
Gianni Rodari, Italian writer of children’s literature, made a list of the “New ways of teaching to hate reading:”
1- Berating children who do not like to read.
2- Forcing our kids to read.
3- Forcing them to read a book that is not to their liking.
4- Requiring them to read the book from start to finish.
5- Leaving the child alone with the book.
6- Turning books into other “homework.”
7- Telling them all the details of the book.
8- Turning the book into a teaching tool.
9- Forcing them to discuss a book.
If we want children to love and enjoy reading, this list makes things we should not do very clear; it also shows us what we must practice. We must strengthen our children’s interest in reading. Reading should not be forced, as we tend to reject almost everything we are told to do. It is important to search and choose books that are of interest to children. It is also important to guide them, suggesting books and offering them a choice.
